“Purpose\n\nTo compare the safety and efficacy of corticorelin acetate (CrA) and placebo in patients with malignant brain tumors requiring chronic administration of dexamethasone (DEX) to control the signs and symptoms of peritumoral brain edema (PBE).\n\nPatients and Methods\n\nProspective, randomized, double-blind study of 200 patients

with PBE on a stable dose of DEX. Initially, DEX dose was decreased by 50% over a 2-week period and then held at this level for 3 weeks. “A novel microcoil fabrication method was developed. In the past research, copper microcoils were fabricated by wet-etching copper pipes with helical resist patterns formed using laser-scan lithography. However, etched coil widths often locally fluctuated owing to the influence of the surface and backsurface conditions of the pipes, and it was difficult to consistently fabricate microcoils with homogeneous widths. For this reason, in the new method, microcoils are fabricated by nickel electroplating instead of etching. After forming helical patterns on a fine stainless-steel wire with a diameter of 80 mu m, nickel was electroplated in the spaces of resist patterns. Because the adhesion of nickel to the stainless-steel wire was not very strong, helically electroplated nickel was tore off from the core wire, and the microcoil was fabricated when the wire was pulled and lengthened. “To evaluate high-resolution multi-pinhole single photon emission computed tomography (MPH-SPECT) for the detection of bony alterations in early rheumatoid arthritis (ERA), early osteoarthritis (EOA) of the fingers and healthy controls.\n\nThe clinically dominant hands of 27 patients (13 ERA, nine EOA, five healthy controls) were examined by MPH-SPECT and bone scintigraphy. Additionally, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed in the ERA patients. Number of affected joints, localisation, pattern of tracer distribution and joint involvement were scored. Quantitative analysis was achieved by measurement of the region of interest (ROI) in all patients. The MPH-SPECT and MR images were fused in the ERA group.\n\nBone scintigraphy detected fewer joints (26 joints,13/22 patients) with increased tracer uptake than did MPH-SPECT (80 joints, 21/22 patients). “Objective. Eating Disorders (ED), anorexia nervosa (AN) in particular, are significant causes of morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study is to evaluate how laboratory studies can help to diagnose AN and to choose the type of care according to the degree

“The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of lymphangiography as a treatment for various chyle leakages. Pedal lymphangiography was performed in 9 patients (6 men and 3 women; mean age, 59 years) who were unlikely to be cured only by conservative treatment – a low-fat medium-chain triglyceride diet, total parenteral nutrition and insertion of a drainage tube – and in whom chylothorax (n=5), chylous ascites (n=2) and lymphatic fistulae (n=2) were refractory to conservative treatment. In 7 of these 9 patients (78%), we could detect the chyle leakage sites. In 8 of the 9 patients (89%), lymphatic leakage was stopped after lymphangiography, and surgical re-intervention was avoided. No cases had a recurrence of chyle leakage during follow-up (range, 1-54 months). Lymphangiography is effective not only for diagnosis but also as treatment for various chyle leakages. Early lymphangiography is therefore recommended for patients with chyle leakages who are unlikely to be cured by conservative treatment only.

palsy exhibit abnormal upper extremity postures and slow voluntary movement. However, the interaction between abnormal postures and abnormal movement in dystonia is still unclear. Some mechanisms by which postures are maintained in dystonia include stretch reflexes, overflow of muscle activation to other muscles, and direct coactivation of antagonist muscles. This study explored the independent contributions of each of these postural mechanisms to abnormal biceps brachii (antagonist) activity during elbow extension, which slows movement. A linear model of biceps activation as a function of velocity-dependent reflexes, triceps-dependent overflow, and direct drive to the biceps was fitted to experimental data from 11 children and young adults with secondary dystonia due to cerebral palsy and 11 age-matched control subjects. Subjects performed elbow extension movements against each of four levels of resistance without perturbations or in each of two perturbation conditions. Results show that biceps activity in children with dystonia consists of significant contributions of reflex activation, overflow from triceps, and direct muscular drive. Additionally, stretch reflexes during movement are shown to be elevated at three latencies after stretch.

“The wild resources of Gastrodia elata are currently threatened with extinction due to over-harvesting because of their high medicinal value. Genetic diversity plays a key role in the survival of endangered orchid species. In this study we investigated the genetic pattern in eight microsatellite loci within eight G. elata populations from central China. Compared with the other orchids, G. elata showed a low level of genetic variation within populations (H-E = 0.356-0.622). The main factors responsible for the genetic pattern were the plant’s inbreeding system due to mating within clone patches, and the genetic bottlenecks and genetic drift caused by a long-history over-collecting. The significant heterozygote deficit was detected in all the populations.

The F statistics calculated by different approaches consistently revealed a clear genetic differentiation among populations, contributing about 20% of the total gene diversity. The results are discussed in relation to both CX-6258 mouse in situ and ex situ conservation efforts of the species. Mean (SD) age was 66 (18) years, 51.4% were women, 48.6% men. Principal component analysis with varimax rotation confirmed a five-component structure, but four items lowered reliability and were removed from the scales. The final version consists of four components, with Cronbach alpha bigger than .70, explaining 64.2% of the variance.
